Shrimp Anatomy

Let’s learn about the different body parts of a shrimp:

  • The body is protected by a hard shell known as the carapace.
  • The rostrum is the sharp beak or nose that shrimp use to protect themselves from predators. It also helps shrimp stabilize themselves when swimming through the water.
  • Shrimp have 5 pairs of jointed legs. The pereopods are used for walking and the cheliped are used for feeding.
  • Shrimp also have swimmerets along the bottom of their tails that they use to stabilize and steer themselves while swimming.
  • The tail or telson of shrimp is used to help them swim and propel themselves through the water.
  • The antenna and antennules provide the senses of touch and smell for shrimp.
